Spring has Sprung...Warmer weather is on the way -- and so are possible claims!
When the weather changes - Spring cleaning comes to mind. This is a great habit to get into. Not only do local charities always need donations of gently used items like clothes and books - getting rid of the clutter outside the house can help to prevent future losses.
- Clearing away leaves and sticks from the base of your house provides you with a good view to see if any ants/termites, etc have made their way into your house.
- Clean out gutters so water can move freely through them and not back up and cause leaks or damage.
- Trimming any dead or dying branches/limbs from trees can prevent them from falling onto your house when those strong Spring and Summer storms come barreling through.
- Check for any loose or cracked cement on driveways, walkways and sidewalks. You are responsible to keep these areas clear and safe to walk/drive on. A little maintenance now can prevent unwanted claims in the future!
- Be sure that any plantings do not hang over walkways or entryways, and be sure that your address is ALWAYS visible from the road - for emergency purposes.
- Clear out all window wells. Full window wells + heavy rains = water leaks into your basement.
- Check your basement for any signs of insect damage or water damage from the winter.
- Check your outdoor grill for nests, leaves, etc. Be sure all the connections are still good and not worn. You don't want your first cookout to be your last!
Spring is a great time to get out and get ready for the Summer ahead. A little extra time now can save future claims! Enjoy! |
